CSS Tutorial - from beginner to CSS layouts in easy to understand English, with examples, every step of the way.

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) have long been used web gurus because of the power they offer. They can be used to format the look and feel of any HTML element, or for designing complete web page layouts.

A typical CSS site:

This second point is very important.

Imagine that you want to change the look of your h1 headers on across a 100 page site. If that site uses CSS to control the look and feel of the web page, then you only need to edit one file. Changing the h1 appearance across your whole site takes seconds. If you don't use CSS, that simple, single change, could take hours.

OK, headlines are one thing, but CSS can do so much more. Imagine you have a site with a menu on the left of the pages. What if you want to move the menu to the right? Well, in CSS, you can achieve this switch in seconds, across the whole site. With sites built using tables, this changeover again will take hours.

Want to see an example?

Have a look at this simple page (opens in a new window). In this example, I am changing the size of both paragraph text, and the h1 header. Look at the code behind that page, and you wont see any formatting in the HTML code itself. The file is small, compact, and loads quickly.

OK, now have a look at this identical html page (opens in a new window). The html of this page is identical to the last example, but uses a different style sheet. Examine the html code again. See how the html is the same as the last example? The appearance is very different, and that appearance has been defined in a style sheet.

This course will take you from zero CSS knowledge (though you do need a basic understanding of HTML), and show you how to integrate CSS into your own sites.

Let's look at another example.

Here is an example of a 3 column layout that the course teaches you how to build. The left menu is on the left, and the right menu is on the right, as you would expect. However, with a simple editing of the CSS file that controls the layout of this page, we can reverse those. Here is the page again, but with the menus switched.

This type of layout change can be done in minutes, across an entire site, without editing the web page HTML. This CSS course will teach you how to do this, plus much more.

This course is just over 100 pages, and includes:

This eBook (PDF document) was written for those wanting to learn CSS, but who found books on the subject too difficult to understand. I assume no CSS knowledge, though some HTML knowledge is required.

Customer testimonial:

Dear Dr. Andy:

I had been using CSS for a year or so, but I knew that I was largely using a "monkey see, monkey copy" approach without really understanding the underlying logic.

I now have a better understanding of what I'm doing -- and what I'd been doing.  In fact, your graphic depiction of "The Box Model" was for a while the wallpaper on my computer, helping me to fully (and finally) conceptualize the process.  Once again, thank you for making clear this powerful web-creation tool.
